The Government's Role in Recycling
Recycling is good for a diversified economy. For example, on a per-ton basis, for every job created at a landfill, recycling sustains 10 more jobs just through sorting alone (Institute for Local Self-Reliance, 1999). Also, recycling provides manufacturers with a recycled feedstock that can be reincorporated back into new products.
Government should lead the way in promoting recycling, waste reduction reuse efforts. Government should provide the base leadership that is needed to put recycling, waste reduction and reuse in front of consumers thus driving increased awareness. Most individuals and businesses have only sporadically seen information in what they can do to make a difference.
Our goal at NSRA is to provide information that encourages innovative approaches and application of best practices spearheaded by government representatives.
